A change of season brings with it a change of scenery. Driving through the Hampshire countryside this morning I could sense the shifting season – orange, red and yellow leaves intermingling with the vibrant green that has characterised summer, now but a fading memory. Warm temperatures and high rainfall have made our countryside more lush than ever. Now that autumn is knocking at the door, we are set be treated to a medley of colours, transforming the landscape into a scene as pretty as any picture.
Even the most beguiling vista can tire after gazing at it for long enough however. If you’re ready for a change of scenery, why not leave your local landscape behind and take an autumn break? Make the most of the mild temperatures and take the chance to explore the magnificent countryside, attractions and activities our neighbouring counties have in abundance.
Where else in the UK would you get to wander freely amongst primates?
Staffordshire is often described as the Heart of England and is a fascinating county to visit at any time of the year. In Autumn, however, it truly comes into its own; in my opinion there’s no better time to get acquainted with Staffordshire’s many charms. The county is home to some of Britain’s best theme parks, historic castles, stately homes and museums. Let’s not forget the natural beauty of the Peak District National Park either, the National Forest, Cannock Chase and South Staffordshire. At the end of a day’s exploring, where better to snuggle up and sample hearty food than in one of Britain’s best pubs and restaurants, many of which are scattered across the county?
To awaken your senses and ready you for a trip to Staffordshire, I’ve found three fab attractions plus a few ideas for taking a trip this autumn.
Occupy your little monkeys

For those of you holidaying with ‘little monkeys’ in tow, I have the perfect treat. Monkey Forest at Trentham is a unique and educational experience. Where else in the UK can you get wander freely among our primate friends? Hang out in 60 acres of stunning woodland and meadows that are home to 140 Barbary Macaques who roam freely from their delightful dwellings.
Knowledgeable guides, information boards and video documentaries provide interesting facts about the behaviours and habits of these fascinating creatures who originate from the Atlas Mountains of Algeria and Morocco. A captivating experience.
Bob along to SnowDome

From mountain monkeys to mountain pursuits, although once again this experience is minus the mountain. SnowDome in Tamworth is the UK’s ‘hottest’ real snow centre; no need for airport runs, expensive ski-wear and transporting your kit. Simply bob along to the SnowDome in some warm clothes and you can hire the rest on arrival. With real snow all year round you’re not dependant on the season either.
There are skiing and snowboarding lessons along with recreational use of the slope for those who are competent and meet the ‘Recreational Standard’. With tobogganing, a dedicated children’s snow-play area, sledging and ice-skating, all winter pursuits are well and truly covered. If that’s not enough, there’s also a pool and fitness centre with spa – the perfect antidote to all that finger-numbing snow.

So what next? Well, I always try and find a new experience for my children to try when we’re away. We’ve tried a diverse selection of activities over the years; some have proven to be winners and have been repeated time and time again, while a few have been less popular. Good or bad, they all go into the memory bank to provide laughs and chatter around the dinner table.
Often on our drive home from school we see Red Kites hovering over the farm fields and both of my boys always watch them with a certain degree of awe. Something I think they would really enjoy is falconry; learning about these majestic birds of prey and the art of falconry would enthral them both I suspect.
